Veteran PA fireman dies in ultra-light crash at Fairchild Airport July 6th, 2006
- 6:04pm
(Port Angeles) -- A Sequim man died this morning when the single-seat
ultra-light plane he was piloting crashed into a hangar at Fairchild Airport in
Port Angeles. Port Angeles Police have identified the pilot as 52-year old
Patrick W. Rose, a 27-year veteran Firefighter/EMT for the City of Port Angeles.
Emergency crews were summoned to the airport at 11:43 AM after several 911 calls
reported the crash of the all-wood craft known as a "Mini Max".
Sergeant Ed Schilke says a witness told police when the aircraft appeared to be
attempting to land, he heard the plane's engine revving at a high rate and the
craft seemed to go into an uncontrolled dive, crashing into the hangar. Schilke
says wreckage was contained in the area of one hangar near the southwest end of
the airport. He says the pilot was ejected from the craft, with most of the
wreckage resting on the roof of the structure. Police say the investigation will
be referred to the Clallam County Coroner. Because the aircraft was
non-certified and not subject to registration requirements, the FAA and the NTSB
stated they would not be responding or investigating.
Pat who was a AB-DAR Tech-Counselor and Past President of this chapter will be
missed. His contributions have been numerous including his
Nieuports project.
